Google Android My Tracks & Do-over

No more Bones In Motion log information for me for a while. I ditched the Blackberry Storm (You can keep it thankyouverymuch!) and am now a proud owner of the Google Android on Verizon’s network. I got the HTC Eris for two reasons 1) It’s named Eris! All Hail Discordia!!! and 2) It’s not Motorola (whom I don’t like at all).

I got to do Week Five over again as I only did it partially last week then stopped running for almost a week. I started over on Week 5 of the Couch to 5k. Honestly, the break came at a good time. My calves were really sore and achy for some reason. So I spent nights stretching them while I was off and will continue to do so. I may start doing Yoga in the morning if I can find another half hour in my day to do it in ARGH. I don’t know what I’m going to do when/if I start doing long runs. I’ll need more time for sure.

Today was beautiful. The BIM Active site shows Weather Information that this one doesn’t show. I hope BIM adds android support soon.

All in all it was a good run and I was glad to get back to it. My Nike+ shoe pod kept stopping working saying I wasn’t moving so I probably won’t keep using it after I get some software on the Android that I love. Which is too bad because I really do like the interface and the challenges and community around the Nike+ site.

How can minimum pace be faster than average pace?

simplerich said...

Minimum pace would be maximum speed so it would always be smaller than average speed. You want a faster pace, it's the inverse of speed since it measures minutes / mile instead of miles per hour.

I think I'm understanding that right. The minimum pace would always be lower than the average pace just like the maximum speed would be higher than the average speed.

So let me get this straight - in plain old English. Are you trying to tell me that when you walk at your lowest pace you are travelling at your fastest? Last time I looked at a dictionary pace is a measure of speed regardless of what units you express it in.

7.7min/mi = 7.79mph (his lowest pace)
11.2 = 5.36mph (his average pace)

The reason I am asking is because I have an HTC Hero running mytracks and this min pace figure is meaningless. I get similar results all the time.

This is a walk I did this lunchtime. Regardless of how we look at this my minimum pace states 2.8 minutes per mile. I would have to walking with a lowest pace of 21.43 miles per hour to achieve 2.8mins per mile.
I can't even achieve that when its last orders at the bar.

Exactly. Pace is the inverse of speed when talking about running to runners. The units are opposite what you're used to. Time is on top.

If, for example I'm going 60 Miles/Hour I will cover 60 miles in an hour. Easy enough. We do that all the time in cars. That is, in runner's pace terms, a 1 minute per mile pace. IF I were going 30 miles per hour that's 2 minutes per mile.

I ran past a speed bump today that said I should travel no faster than 5 miles per hour. That, in pace terms is 12 minutes per mile. At the time I was running 10 minute miles so I was speeding when I crossed the speed bump because my PACE was lower so my SPEED must have been higher, they're inverse. (My speed when I run at a 10 minute mile pace is 6 miles per hour.) I doubt I'll get a ticket at that pace.

To make it easier to 'get' translate the paces to speeds.

Average Pace & Speed: 14.1 min/mi = 4.24 mph
Minimum Pace & Speed: 2.8 min/mi = 21.4 mph

Here's a link to a chart that converts a runner's pace (minutes/mile) to speed in miles/hour). You can't ignore the units. They're what make it all work.

Lowest Pace is not the same as SLowest pace. I think the terminology on the program is part of the source of confusion.

I understand what you are saying but you are missing my point entirely.

Pace is speed.

IF pace is expressed as min/mile then obviously the numerical value will decrease when your speed increases. JUST like the chart you have provided shows.

So when somebody asks you to increase your pace then yes I agree if it is expressed in min/mile then obviously its numerical value will go down.

Look up where 2.8min/mi is on that chart and you will find I was right. And beleive me I do not walk at 21.4 miles per hour!

Phil Lowe said...

Or put another way if I accept the "Lowest Pace is not the same as SLowest pace."

Why is my fastest walking speed faster than your fastest running speed? Based on our minimum pace values.

Yours: Min Pace: 4.76 min/km (7.7 min/mi)
Mine: Min Pace: 1.76 min/km (2.8 min/mi)

In the discussion of pace vs. speed I think we agree. I think you've got the same thing I commented on a different post: Stupid GPS data. Sometimes it moves to somewhere I'm not. The map shows me in a golf course or in some woods, or even once half a mile down a busy road when I was in fact in my yard. During those weird GPS readings the thing doesn't know from making sense and it figures if I was HERE one minute and THERE the next it just does the math and figures out whatever the pace is/was to get me there.

On the Garmin Forefunner 305 I've heard people say that the instantaneous speeds, which is what this thing would be using to find our max speed or minimum pace, are wildly off sometimes, but that the average pace is pretty reliable as they aberrations are buried under piles of good data.

Obviously I don't KNOW that you're not a super-hero that can run 20 mph so I don't doubt it at all. And of course, if you were you'd deny it so really there's no sense in denying it as none of us will believe you Barry Allen! HA! Caught you on blogger! The trick is to catch you.

So, to summarize. My spurious data isn't as out of whack as yours so it looks OK to me. I also don't pay attention to anything but averages because I've seen my GPS warp me around like a super-ball on a rubberband and assume that's going to cause instantaneous readout craziness.

That being said... What kind of shoes do you wear when running 20 mph? Do they get hot?

I think the reason your fastest walking pace is better than my fastest running pace is obvious. I suck at running. :)

That bears out even if you look at my average times lol.

Phil Lowe said...

Lol. I accept your point about the terminology but regardless of how much you may suck at running - I do not by any stretch of the imagination walk at around 24mph. If I did I would sell the car.

Cya around. Nice having a dialogue with ya.

SOmething to backup what you said. Mid walk I did a stats marker on my track and it saved everything as MPH.

Distance: 1.61 km (1.0 mi)
Time: 14:08
Moving Time: 14:01
Average Speed: 6.84 km/h (4.2 mi/h)
Average Moving Speed: 6.90 km/h (4.3 mi/h)
Max Speed: 34.16 km/h (21.2 mi/h)
Min Elevation: 90 m (294 ft)
Max Elevation: 121 m (397 ft)
Elevation Gain: 47 m (154 ft)
Max Grade: 0 %
Min Grade: 0 %

So indeed 'min pace' is 'max speed' in the running world. Which clearly sucks.

Still doesn't explain why I can walk faster than a sprinter. ;-)

Because you're Barry Allan! I saw the show. I've read the comics.

Off to my bed now.

Never heard of Geocaching until I found your site. Gonna have to have a dabble in that. Looks like good fun. Byeee.
